Le projet vise à déterminer scientifiquement les conditions de régénération du pin des Alpes les plus favorables. L’étude s’étendra sur une durée comprise entre 5 et 10 ans afin qu'en croisant les facteurs de provenance avec les méthodes de plantation il soit possible d'établir un processus de régénération efficace et durable pour cette essence emblématique en difficulté. Le challenge est important car la réussite dépend fortement des conditions de chaque site, de la concurrence végétale, des conditions météorologiques, du sol et de l'influence du gibier. Les différentes méthodes testées devront montrer ce qui favorise le plus le succès de la repousse.

This Assisted Natural Regeneration project takes root in the heart of the Swiss Alps, at an altitude of 1,900 metres, in the municipalities of Guttannen and Innertkirchen in the canton of Bern.

Mountain forests face many challenges. Here, it's the Alpine pine or arole that's in trouble, as it's struggling to regenerate. Climate change is to blame. With increasingly mild temperatures at higher altitudes, the arole is facing growing competition from faster-growing species that did not previously thrive at this altitude. There is therefore a risk that this species, which was previously widespread in the area, will become very rare. However, this species is important in the region, as its habitat is home to a unique ecosystem with its own fauna and flora.

The aim of the project is to scientifically determine the most favorable conditions for the regeneration of Alpine pine. The study will last between 5 and 10 years, so that by cross-referencing provenance factors with planting methods, it will be possible to establish an effective and sustainable regeneration process for this emblematic species in difficulty. This is a major challenge, as success depends heavily on site-specific conditions, plant competition, weather and soil conditions, and the influence of game. The different methods tested will have to show what is most conducive to successful regrowth.

In this context, Reforest'Action has joined forces with Karamba and BIOECO to develop a multidimensional project, which aims to reforest degraded land, develop agroforestry and restore mangrove areas, with the aim of eventually increasing forest cover around the communes of Kataba, Diouloulou and Kafountine, and thus contributing to the restoration of soil and biodiversity. This regenerative project will restore natural ecosystems while generating an additional social and economic impact for local communities who live mainly from agriculture, fishing, livestock and forest resources.

For the first year, the project aims at planting 100,000 trees.

The Ziguinchor region, located in southern Senegal between Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, is marked by a strong erosion of its biodiversity, to which the armed conflicts of the 1980s and the demographic explosion have contributed. In addition to this environmental disaster, soils are becoming increasingly saline due to the accumulation of salts with a high sodium content at levels that are toxic for fauna, flora and fungi. The result is a massive abandonment of this land, which gradually becomes infertile and evolves into bare and sterile spaces, unsuitable for any agricultural activity. This natural phenomenon is aggravated by climate change and the retreat of the region's forests, including the mangrove ecosystems along the Casamance River.

Karamba is an economic interest group created in 2015 by Senegalese and French experts and technicians who have worked for more than twenty years in forest management and reforestation, particularly in the Casamance region of Senegal. Within the Senegalese local authorities, Karamba supports several projects in the field of forest management. In the framework of the Kataba project, Karamba ensures the coordination, monitoring and technical evaluation of the project as well as technical training for local communities. Bioeco is a French company that works with consultancy firms on forestry projects, particularly on reforestation. Within the framework of the Kataba project, BIOECO provides technical and financial evaluation and temporary technical support. Karamba and BIOECO have provided their expertise to several reforestation projects in Africa (Senegal, Sierra Leone, Congo, Madagascar).

Reforest'Action is joining forces with Karamba and BIOECO to develop a multi-dimensional project, the main aim of which is to plant 173,043 mangrove trees to restore the mangroves around the communes of Kataba, Diouloulou and Kafountine. The project will also reforest forests and degraded land by planting 2,317 trees, and train local producers in the need to include trees as an integral component of their agriculture by planting 273 agroforestry trees. In this way, the project aims to generate an additional social and economic impact for the local communities, who make their living primarily from agriculture, fishing, livestock farming and forestry resources.

Reforest’Action is joining forces with the Ivorian company Agro-Map to support cocoa producers in the forest of Séguié in the Agnéby-Tiassa region, Ivory Coast, in the restoration of the forest and in the creation of agroforestry systems, which will make it possible to reconcile trees and crops in order to maintain a microclimate favourable to the development of agriculture. Over 200,000 are planted on 450 hectares.

The main objectives of the project are the development of agroforestry, the restoration of a classified forest, the preservation of biodiversity and the economic development of the populations. By restoring their environment: the local communities of Agnéby-Tiassa will also improve their food security.

RESPONSIBLE_CONSUMPTION_AND_PRODUCTION

Deforestation in Ivory Coast, if not halted, could lead to the total disappearance of the country's natural forest cover within the next twenty years. The 234 classified forests in the country, including the Séguié forest in the Agnéby-Tiassa region, where our project takes place, have lost more than 70% of their forest cover in half a century. This is due to extensive agriculture and cocoa production, which have gained ground on the primary Ivorian forests, and the unsustainable exploitation of these forests to meet the growing need for firewood. This loss of animal and plant biodiversity is now causing climatic changes throughout the region, in particular a reduction in rainfall and the appearance of increasingly long periods of drought, which often have a fatal effect on the crops of local communities. 

Agro-Map is an Ivorian company specialising in the development of sustainability projects in the agricultural, forestry and environmental fields. Its objective is to reconcile agriculture and forestry in order to maintain a microclimate favourable to the development of agriculture. The Agro-Map team is in constant contact with farmers and builds strong partnerships with local communities.

Reforest'Action is partnering with the Ivorian company Agro-Map to support cocoa farmers in the Séguié forest in restoring the forest and creating agroforestry systems, which will allow them to reconcile the trees with their crops. By restoring their environment, the local communities of Agnéby-Tiassa will also improve their food security and income.

Since 2017, Reforest’Action is partnering with Yagasu, an Indonesian NGO, to work concretely on the restoration of this unique biodiversity hotspot, essential to the protection of the island’s coastlines. The objectives of the action correspond to the identified problems or real needs of the coastal community. Restoring mangroves as a nature-based solution strategy could make communities more resilient to environmental changes and improve their social-economic capacity. By working with local communities, this project aimed to restore severely degraded sites, control abrasion and reduce the tsunami's impact to improve the community’s agility in climate change mitigation. This project also increased the commitment of the local communities to protecting mangroves through group formation, policy initiative development, and environmental awareness education.

Indonesia is the world's most deforested country, with rainforest disappearing twice as fast as in the Amazon. In 1987, northern Sumatra boasted 200,000 hectares of mangroves. Today, less than half this remains, at just 83,000 hectares. This massive deforestation is mainly due to anthropic pressure: mangroves are converted into areas for intensive shrimp and fish farming or palm oil production, and illegally felled to make firewood or charcoal. The disappearance of mangroves, accelerated by global warming, makes coasts even more vulnerable to flooding and land erosion.

Since 2003, Yagasu, an Indonesian environmental NGO, has been restoring mangroves in collaboration with forest communities. Since its foundation, almost 6,000 hectares have been replanted. Yagasu's mangrove protection and restoration project has conserved 23 different mangrove species, 8 mammal species, 16 reptile and amphibian species, 32 invertebrate species (crabs, shrimps, etc.), 73 bird species, 41 fish species and 9 migratory bird species.

With the aim of restoring and extending the native mangrove on the island of Sumatra to protect its coastlines and secure the economic activities linked to it, Reforest'Action entered into a lasting partnership with local NGO Yagasu in 2017. The objectives of the campaign respond to identified problems or real needs of the coastal community. The project aims to restore severely degraded sites by working hand-in-hand with local populations, controlling abrasion and reducing the impact of the tsunami.

Ce projet a pris racine en 2017  à Palencia, en plein centre de la région autonome de Castilla-y-León (Espagne) . Les enjeux forestiers de cette région sont très importants : la déprise agricole y est très forte, à cause notamment d'un exode rural très important. D'autre part, de nombreux feux de forêts ont sévi ces dernières années, dégradant ainsi profondément la biodiversité, les sols ainsi que les paysages. L'ampleur du projet ayant fortement progressé, les projets s'étendent désormais sur toute la région. L'objectif principal du projet est de restaurer un écosystème forestier diversifié qui avait disparu, pour qu'il puisse délivrer à nouveau de la biodiversité tout en laissant aux populations locales un paysage naturel restauré qui redynamisera aussi bien le tourisme que l'économie. Tout cela se faisant bien sûr dans un contexte de lutte contre les changements climatiques. Cette année-là, 8 nouvelles zones de plantation se rajoutent avec 60 056 arbres plantés.

This project took root in 2017 in Palencia, in the heart of the autonomous region of Castilla-y-León (Spain). The region faces major forestry challenges, with a high level of agricultural abandonment, due in particular to a large-scale rural exodus. In addition, numerous forest fires have broken out in recent years, causing severe damage to biodiversity, soils and landscapes. The scope of the project has grown considerably, and projects now cover the entire region. The main aim of the project is to restore a diverse forest ecosystem that had disappeared, so that it can once again deliver biodiversity, while leaving the local population with a restored natural landscape that will revitalize both tourism and the economy. All this, of course, in the context of the fight against climate change. That year, 8 new planting zones were added, with 60,056 trees planted.

- Planted trees help combat global warming by storing CO2 in the form of wood. Forests regulate local temperatures and generate rainfall that benefits crops in agricultural areas
- The planting of agroforestry trees helps to protect the underlying food crops from too much sun or heavy rainfall by creating shade during the dry season and a protective cover during the rainy season.
- Managed sustainably by local communities, the trees planted in agroforestry will eventually produce wood for their own use or for generating additional income through its sale.
- Some of the species planted have medicinal properties that are sought after by local populations for self-consumption or sale.
- The local populations are made aware of the need to protect their environment and to maintain the trees planted in the long term.

The project is located around the city of Tarapoto, in the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area. Anchored in the upper Amazon, the project area was originally covered by tropical forests and wetlands. Since the late 20th century, the expansion of agricultural programmes for the cultivation of coffee, cocoa, bananas, maize and manioc, as well as the construction of road infrastructure have led to the massive deforestation of primary forests. Some 1.6 million hectares of primary forest have already been destroyed in the last fifty years. The families of the Shawi, Awajun and Quechua ethnic groups are increasingly suffering from the disappearance of natural ecosystems: changes in the rainy season, prolonged droughts and lack of water are becoming commonplace.

Founded in 2004, the Urku Centre, located in Tarapoto, carries out activities to develop Amazonian biodiversity and raise awareness among local communities. Made up of a multidisciplinary team that combines traditional and scientific knowledge, the Urku Centre monitors the production of seedlings in several nurseries, as well as the logistics of the plantations. Alongside local cooperatives, our partner also ensures the recovery and growth of the planted trees.

In the San Martin region of Peru, Reforest'Action has teamed up with the Urku Center to plant a variety of agroforestry trees in the Amazon rainforest. These trees will bring numerous benefits to both local communities and Amazonian ecosystems.
